Black Washingtonians

Book By Rolyat Mosi
To this collection of Black Washingtonians, we pour out libations and honors to those Ancestors that made it a little easier for all the un-identified and unnamed Black persons. These are Black people who have made a significant societal impact or made historical contributions to the Pacific Northwest including Oregon Territory, Washington Territory and Washington State. These Black pioneers deserve their rightful place in American History.

It is important to acknowledge that this land is truly the lands of Indigenous people and includes the traditional territories of the Coastal Salish Peoples, specifically the ancestral land of the Duwamish, Suquamish, Snoqualmie, Muckleshoot Tribes, Puyallup, Sequan, as well as the Makah, Cowlitz, Nisqually, Quileute, Colville Confederated Tribes, Chehalis, Chinook, Nooksack, Yakama, and other proud indigenous people who originally lived in these lands. Black Washingtonians lived with these Indigenous people.

The collection’s profiles are indexed by ‘Time’ and chronologically with separations based on 50-year increments. There is a note about the 1700s but no entries. The Time indexing starts with the 1800s for Black Washingtonian personality entries. The writer acknowledges that the collections are void of some important Black personalities and that there is always opportunity for great clarity as more information is researched, unveiled, and provided. There are more Black Washingtonians out there!

Overall, it was a wonderful thing as a student of history, to read about, research and learn about these powerful people that walked here and help to make this region one of the strongest in the USA and the world. I felt like I was walking beside them.
